Born 1962 in Tokyo. Murakami’s paintings, drawings, sculptures and installations have their roots in the Japanese figurative culture. Formal traditional elements, such as flat colours, lack of depth, precise and marked contours, are combined with typical trends of contemporary art, involving a style derived from manga (comics) and anime (cartoons). Through bright colours and funny faces in his paintings and sculptures, the artist stands against the marginalization of this subculture, which he is for him an extreme representation of the Japanese people uneasiness.
